Everyday we are coming across more and more reasons why Building Information Modelling provides the best way to generate value in the construction industry. Accross every aspect of construction from inception through to operation BIM can now add value to the process. Every week we have conversations with designers, constructors, operations who are recognising that an integrated approach using connected data can add huge value across a buildings life cycle.
Several years ago our conversations were with other like minded consultants. We then started talking to some constructors and then followed sub-contractors. We are now having really positive conversations with end user clients and facilities management companies who understand the benefits. We are also building an understanding with construction product manufacturers who also can see where they can position themselves within this integrated approach.
Not only are we seeing huge advances in the software but also in the use of hardware and devices to access the information.
We are now using iPads to help in the communication and validation of digital information. In the past sharing of information was very much a 2D paper exercise however with iPad type devices were able to give an excellent representation of the modelling in three dimensions.
Video and 3D visualisations from models are now so easily accessible from the cloud which continues to be central aspect of data-sharing. Throughout 2012 undoubtedly we will see an increased use of the cloud to access information and process models.
Many of the UK BIM community have been away for the past week in Las Vegas attending AutoDesk University Annual Conference. As well as hitting the roulette tables there has been lots of information being gathered which has been brought back to the UK to push Building Information Modelling into new directions.
I have already mentioned the cloud and how this will be a new way to operate software and share information. It also seems software developers have been investing in lifecycle management showing how buildings can operate more efficiently and effectively over a longer period of time.
The ball is without doubt moving now for BIM and is gathering momentum.
