Built in 1954, Hummersknott Academy required partial refurbishment and remodelling to ensure it was up to date and able to provide a high standard of education for the Darlington area. The _space group team tackled this project by creating a new entrance area, science and technology centre and a creative arts facility, while also refurbishing existing classrooms, main hall and sports centre.
Our team ensured that the design of the new build was sympathetic to the 1950s style of the existing buildings, which were externally insulated and rendered to help create a uniform look across the school’s estate.
This project required an extremely high level of cooperation from every member of the design team, as it had to be carried out while the school was still operational, making proper site management and safety a constant priority.
