Neil Beattie
Professor of Energy Innovation at Northumbria University
Neil Beattie is a Professor of Energy Innovation at Northumbria University, Newcastle. He has 20 years of experience working in clean tech R&D (both within the industry and academia), and primarily focuses on the intersection of research, innovation and skills for a more sustainable future.
At Northumbria, Neil's research focused on photovoltaics, from materials to systems, with a particular interest in scaling to multi-terawatt electricity generation sustainably. He is also the Director of the ReNU/ReNU+ Centre for Doctoral Training, due to his broad interest in STEM skills training across all levels.
Recently, Neil has founded an Innovation Skills Consultancy and supports clients to unlock existing potential, through things like critical thinking workshops.
Neil joined us for the 2025 afternoon panel discusion on 'Material Innovation: Rethinking Resources for a Low-Carbon Future.' His expert knowledge on photovoltiac units and sustainable energy gave the audience a fresh insight into the energy industry.
