_shift is Space Group’s annual climate conference dedicated to decarbonising the built environment. The sector is both a major contributor to the climate crisis and a vital part of the solution.
_shift 2025 returned to Newcastle University’s Henry Daysh Building with its strongest programme to date. The event brought together architects, researchers, manufacturers, local government voices, students and climate activists for a day shaped by shared purpose.
As the climate conversation becomes more complex, _shift continues to create space for collaboration across disciplines, strengthening the role the built environment can play in global decarbonisation. This year’s event set the agenda around policy reform, regenerative design, material innovation, and the launch of D-CARB, an open-access tool that reduces whole-life carbon from the earliest stage.
Across the talks, Q&As, panels and behind-the-scenes interviews, what became clear was that progress relies on collective action, and that optimism remains one of our most powerful tools for building momentum.
Presentations & Panel Discussions
This year’s presentations covered a broad span of topics that reflect where the industry is heading. Talks explored how we can design for resilience, rethink long-standing policy structures, accelerate regenerative approaches, and re-imagine the materials we rely on every day.
Space Group strongly believes in our collective power and responsibility to save the planet whilst motivating others in the industry to follow suit. _shift 2025 was another influential step towards achieving this goal, and we hope all who attended left with a renewed sense of urgency and empowerment. We look forward to reuniting for shift 2026.
